Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, is singled out as a suspected perpetrator after the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, where 15 people died and 25 were injured.

According to the FBI, he was a US citizen from Texas who served in the US Army.

At the time of the attack, he was dressed in military clothing and had an IS flag in the car. The FBI does not believe he acted alone.

More details about Shamsud Din Jabbar are now emerging.

He was a Marine in the military and served in Afghanistan in 2009 but was “honorably discharged” from the military in 2020 and subsequently converted to Islam.

This is confirmed by Dwayne Marsh, who is married to Din Jabbar’s ex-wife Nakedra Charrlle, writes New York Times.

“Got crazy and cut his hair”

According to Dwayne Marsh, Jabbar and his ex-wife have two daughters who are 15 and 20 years old.

    – They are completely devastated after the attack, he tells the New York Times.

Dwayne Marsh says that the suspected perpetrator has recently started behaving erratically. After he converted to Islam, “he went completely crazy and cut his hair,” he says.

It had gone so far that Dwayne Marsh and his wife forbade the daughters to see their father, he says.

    Boast about real estate

In a 2020 YouTube video believed to have been posted by Jabbar, but now taken down, the suspected perpetrator talked about his knowledge of real estate.

He said he was born and raised in Beaumont, a Texas city of 115,000, and had served in the U.S. Army.

    – I’ve been here my whole life, with the exception of when I traveled with the military, he said in the video, according to the New York Times.

The suspected perpetrator also said that during his 10 years in the military he worked as a specialist in both HR and IT.

Shamsud Din Jabbar was married twice. During the second divorce, in January 2022, he emailed his then-wife’s lawyer and told her about his financial problems.

“I can’t afford to pay the house,” he wrote.

“I am $27,000 (around SEK 300,000, editor’s note) behind in payments and if we don’t get the divorce through soon, there may be a risk that I will lose the house.”

    Had million salary

He also said that the real estate company he founded had lost around SEK 300,000 in 2021 and that he had borrowed the equivalent of SEK 177,000 for lawyers and to organize a second home. Therefore, he proposed that he and his wife should sell the joint house and divide the money.

According to Texas criminal records, Shamsud Din Jabbar had two counts; for a minor theft in 2002 and for driving without a valid driver’s license in 2005. For both crimes he was sentenced to just over a thousand Swedish kroner in fines.

Shamsud Din Jabbar was shot dead by police after the attack, which is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
