Catch the Killer delves into human depths on the hunt for serial killers
In the crime thriller Catch the Killer by Damián Szifron (Wild Tales)
An unknown man kills 17 people completely at random on New Year’s Eve with shots from his Sniper rifle. The city of Baltimore is in a frenzy because the police can’t catch the sniper. There is great fear that the mass murderer could become a repeat offender: a serial killer with an extremely high number of victims.
Only police officer Eleanor Falco (Shailene Woodley) finds a serious lead and is therefore recruited by lead FBI investigator Geoffrey Lammark (Ben Mendelsohn) to catch the killer. But Eleanor can not only empathize with the murderer, but also struggles with her own psychological problems.

Catch the Killer: Shailene Woodley & Ben Mendelsohn
The thriller concept where someone is on behalf of the police empathize with the mind of a murderer, nothing new since Blood Moon – Red Dragon or The Silence of the Lambs. However, Catch the Killer manages to gain even more from its oppressive narrative.
An important part of the exciting thriller is the pitfalls of police statistics, bureaucracy and desired career paths. These obstacles that the police put in their own way when searching for the killer pose a problem second overwhelming opponent which increases the tension and frustration.
The subtle difference between the title Catch the Killer (translated: “Catch the murderer”) chosen in Germany and the original English title To Catch a Killer (“To catch a murderer”) makes a lot of difference: the theoretical instruction to catch a perpetrator may be simple. But the practical obstacles that the police apparatus puts in the way of those who actually just want to concentrate on their investigation are not.
