Domestic unrest is also growing in Israel, which is on the brink of war with Lebanon. News of the sexual torture of a Palestinian prisoner and the subsequent detention of Israeli soldiers has also caused chaos in parliament.
INTERESTING CALL FROM NETANYAHU’S MP
Speaking at a parliamentary committee, Hanoch Milwidsky, a member of parliament from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, called on all members of the coalition to leave the session until the attempt to detain soldiers in Sde Teiman is concluded.
SHOCKING RESPONSE FROM ISRAELI MP
Palestinian-origin Israeli MP Ahmed Tybi asked the Likud representative, “Is it legitimate to stick a stick into someone’s anus?” Israeli MP Milwidsky said, “Everything is legitimate. If it’s a terrorist that was taken out of Gaza, everything that is done is legitimate.” This scene in the parliament was shared extensively on social media.
9 SOLDIERS ACCUSED OF TORTURE DETAINED
Meanwhile, nine soldiers accused of torturing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility have been detained as part of an investigation by the Israeli army. Army Radio reported that all of the detained soldiers were suspected of “seriously mistreating the detainee” and that they carried out the mistreatment together.
According to reports in the Israeli press, the allegations of ill-treatment of a Palestinian prisoner emerged approximately 3 weeks ago and that the Palestinian prisoner in question was arrested by the army in the Gaza Strip a few weeks ago. The reports stated that the Palestinian prisoner was taken to hospital for treatment and surgery. The reports stated that the military police had been collecting evidence about the incident for the past three weeks and decided to detain the suspects for questioning today, and that 9 of the 10 suspects were detained in Sde Teiman today.
PROTESTERS STORM MILITARY BASE
Following the news of the detentions, Israeli far-right protesters gathered in front of the Beit Lid Air Base in central Israel, where nine soldiers were being questioned, and demanded their release. The far-right members clashed with the soldiers and then stormed the military base.
THEY BLINKED HIM AND MADE HIM SIT ON THE FLOOR FOR 18 HOURS
The Sde Teiman detention center in southern Israel, where detained Gazans are held, is frequently in the news for torture. A report in the New York Times last month stated that Gazans detained at the Sde Teiman detention center are blindfolded, handcuffed and forced to sit silently on the ground in an open area for up to 18 hours a day. The report noted that Palestinian detainees brought to the detention center stay there for up to three months and that many are subjected to inhumane treatment and torture during the interrogation process. Some Gazans who were held there and later released have spoken out about the torture they were subjected to at Sde Teima.
After the Israeli military police arrived in Sde Teiman to detain 9 Israeli soldiers accused of sexually torturing a Palestinian, incidents broke out as a result of the soldiers resisting the arrest.
Far-right Israeli politicians, masked and armed soldiers and far-right fanatic groups had raided the military base. Similar groups had also forced their way into the base in the evening, where the military court where the detained soldiers were taken was located.
The raids by far-right extremists on two military bases in one day have sparked intense debate in Israel. (AA)
