“Sexism is not receding in France. On the contrary, some of its most violent manifestations are worsening and the younger generations are the most affected”. This is what the HCE, the high council for equality, writes in the report submitted this Wednesday to the President of the Republic.
Five years after the Me too phenomenon and the liberation of women’s speech, notable progress has been made in terms of women’s rights, but sexism remains firmly rooted in all spheres of French society: at school, in the work, in the street or in transport, women are increasingly subject to discrimination, attacks and violence. According to the HCE report, 23% of men aged 15 to 34 believe, for example, that it is sometimes necessary to be violent to gain respect. Tonight in Décryptage, we try to understand why sexist stereotypes continue to affect the daily lives of half the French population.
