A large proportion of the elderly who died from covid-19 lived in the country’s nursing homes. Critics have therefore claimed that the medical competence in the municipalities needs to be strengthened. Now the new government wants to set up an investigation to investigate the possibility for the municipalities to hire doctors.
The Medical Association is positive about the idea of having employed doctors within the municipalities, but sees a problem with the fact that there is already a shortage of doctors in the country.
– It is a challenge that we have a shortage of specialists, for example in general medicine and geriatrics. If you look at the need for specialists in general medicine, we need about twice as many as we have today, says Sofia Rydgren Stale, president of the Medical Association.
But doctors TV4 Nyheterna spoke to are doubtful and the medical association fears that the crisis with the shortage of doctors will become even greater if the proposal becomes a reality.
