The fraudsters called pretending to represent the bank or the police, and used made-up case numbers to mislead victims. In some cases, they even tried to visit the victims in their homes.
The victims, who are in their 90s and 95s, live in the areas of Kristiansborg, Gideonsberg and Irsta in Västerås.
– We have to get it in that you should never give out personal data. The bank and the police do not call up and ask you to log in to your bank ID or make a home visit, says Magnus Jansson Klarin, spokesperson for the police.
Investigations are ongoing and the police are now urging the public – especially the elderly and their relatives – to be extra vigilant and report suspicious calls to 112.
