At least 15 people have died in heavy fires in northern Algeria.

A further 30 are said to be injured and 1,500 have been evacuated from their homes.

A total of 97 fires have been observed along the Mediterranean coast, the vast majority of which are believed to have been caused by temperatures of up to 48 degrees in combination with strong winds.

It is the third year in a row that the area has been affected by several fires. Last year 37 people died in the fires, in 2021 the fire claimed 90 lives.
