At least six people have died after a fire at a nursing home in Milan.
Over 80 people had to be taken to hospital – several of them with serious injuries.
– Now the investigation must show what happened, says the mayor Giuseppe Sala to the news agency Ansa.
Shortly after one o’clock on the night of Friday, staff raised the alarm about a fire at a nursing home in Milan in northern Italy. Emergency services, ambulance and the police were all called to the scene and a major rescue operation was launched.
During the morning, at least six people were found dead after the fire. These are five women and one man. Two people have been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and several are seriously injured.
An investigation has been launched
A total of 81 people have been taken to various hospitals in the region, according to the Italian news agency Ansa. The rescue operation was still ongoing during the morning.
Milan’s mayor Giuseppe Sala visited the nursing home after the fire in the morning. According to him, the authorities are now working to find housing for all those affected by the fire.
It is still unclear how the fire started. An investigation has been started to see how the nursing home, which has 210 places, could catch fire.
