At least seven children and an adult have been stabbed at a playground in Annecy, France, reports say Le Dauphine.
A man in his 30s has been arrested. According to French media, the man has connections to Sweden as he was recently granted refugee status here.
“Several children and an adult hover between life and death. The nation is in shock,” President Emmanuel Macron signs Twitter.
It was just before 10 a.m. that the police were called to a park in central Annecy, on the border with Switzerland, where a man allegedly attacked a group of children.
– It is believed that the children are three years old, says reporter Jennifer Paterson, directly from Paris.
At least seven children and one adult are said to have been injured. Several of these are said to have life-threatening injuries, several French media reports.
“My thoughts go out to the victims, relatives, police and rescue personnel,” writes French politician Antoine Armand Twitter.
Man arrested – links to Sweden
The police were able to quickly arrest a man in his 30s, reports Le Dauphine.
“An individual has been arrested thanks to the quick action of the police,” signed French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin Twitter.
According to Le Figaro the man is believed to be an asylum seeker and is not previously known to the police. The newspaper also states that the man received refugee status in Sweden on April 26, 2023.
The site is cordoned off and police, emergency services, ambulances and ambulance helicopters are on site.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin are on their way to Annecy, according to AFP.
