seven years after the murder of Senzo Meyiwa five suspects

In South Africa, a long-awaited trial, already postponed twice, is due to open this Friday around the mysterious death in 2014 of Senzo Meyiwa, football goalkeeper and star captain of the Bafana Bafana national team.

With our correspondent in Johannesburg, Claire Bargeles

The case dates back to October 26, 2014, when Senzo Meyiwa is shot dead while visiting his mistress, singer Kelly Khumalo, in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg. The official version, a burglary that would have gone wrong, has long been used as an explanation for the murder. It is now the track of assassination that is privileged.

Five men are now in the dock before the High Court in Pretoria. Several of them have already received heavy sentences for other crimes, without connection. According to one of the defense lawyers, two of them would be ready to confess to the murder of the former football star.

However, this lead fails to convince Senzo Meyiwa’s brother, who accuses the police of not focusing on the right people and of trying to hide something.

This trial keeps the whole country in suspense, because the Netflix platform has put online, since the beginning of the month, a documentary series in five episodes which goes into detail on the case and its gray areas.

It is also a crucial file for the South African police and prosecutors who are staking their reputation, while criticism has accumulated over the past seven years for the lack of progress in the investigation despite the number of witnesses. present at the time of the attack.
