The discovery of a historic crocodile fossil has given paleontologists clues to how modern crocodiles – which are now both salt and freshwater creatures – first came ashore from the sea.
– The crocodile was found in the Arequipa desert but its closest relatives are in Africa and Europe, says Rodolfo Salas, paleontologist and professor at the University of Peru Cayetano Heredia.
According to experts, millions of years ago the desert was a deep-sea bottom inhabited by, among others, whales, giant sharks and crocodiles.
