Saudi Arabia has executed seven people, according to state media. The seven were convicted of “creating and financing terrorist organizations,” according to authorities in the authoritarian kingdom.
It is the highest number of executions carried out in a single day since March 2022 when 81 prisoners were executed on the same day.
So far this year, 29 people have been executed in Saudi Arabia and the figure for the whole of 2023 amounts to 170 death sentences. The year before that, in 2022, only China and Iran carried out more death sentences, according to Amnesty International.
Saudi Arabia is ruled with an iron fist by the royal house of al-Saud and their views on human rights are repeatedly criticized by human rights groups.
