Cimafunk became the Cuban musical revelation of the year 2018 with its theme Me Voy, which earned him the designation “artist of the yearby Vistar Magazine and receiving the Lucas Award for Most Popular Video. Songs from his debut album Terapia like Me Voy, Paciente Where Parar el tiempo have inexorably conquered a multitude of audiences. He broke attendance records in iconic venues in Cuba and around the world, with thousands of fans transported to the groove of Afro-Cuban funk. In Cuba, millennials reproducing his style and appearance, which is strongly inspired by his African roots and black showmen of the XXth century.
The name of Cimafunk refers to its heritage of ” cimarrón », Cubans of African origin who resisted and escaped slavery, as well as the essence of his music which aims to subvert conventional sounds by innovating with rhythms. By bringing out the best of Cuban rhythms and traditions and infusing them with sounds and styles from Africa and the United States, Cimafunk has created something unique and special, not only in terms of music but also values he defends.
Named by Billboard as one of “Top 10 Latino artists to follow “, Cimafunk made a smashing debut at the 2019 South by Southwest Music Festival and toured the United States and Europe with acclaim. Fito Paez called him “future“Latin American music, and Rolling Stone described his music as”an electrifying combination of funk and soul, layered on top of the five-beat clave, or the heartbeat of Cuban music, brought to Cuba by slaves from West Africa. “
Cimafunk released a EP Cun Cun Prá, in December 2020. Composed of 5 pieces including a contagious Afro-Caribbean sound: Cun Cun Prá ; a funky piece of pop The dad, with Cuban pop sensation Diana Fuentes; a sensual R&B remix of Parar El Tiempo, with the promising Mexican singer Salma; Caliente, a hip-hop track where New Orleans meets Havana featuring Tarriona “Tank“Ball by Tank and the Bangas and the brass band The Soul Rebels; and El Potaje where Cimafunk invites living legends Omara Portuondo, Chucho Valdés, Pancho Amat and the Orquesta Aragón to unite the past, present and future of Cuban music.
During a historic concert in Miami on October 16, 2021, Cimafunk brought together his two main inspirations on stage: the legendary pianist from Irakere, Chucho Valdes, and the godfather of Funk, George clinton by Parliament Funkadelic.
