Serious Ivo criticism of forensic psychiatry in Säter

An inspection by the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo) shows that patients in forensic psychiatry at Säters hospital were denied leave and daily outdoor stay on incorrect grounds.

Patients have described being discharged as a form of punishment. One patient testified, for example, that he had not been released for 1.5 years as punishment for behaving badly, including swearing.

Body searches without a doctor’s order

Ivo also criticizes that the staff in the department have carried out body searches without the necessary medical decisions.

The review also shows serious criticism of the fact that a patient who has been kept separate from others for more than ten years should have received insufficient care. According to Ivo, the patient’s health problems have been overlooked and drug treatment has not been followed up according to recommendations.

No regular dental care

In addition, patients do not have access to regular dental care, which Ivo believes is contrary to good care. Many patients are treated for a long time and take medications that can negatively affect dental health.

Ivo also points out major shortcomings in the documentation and quality work, which makes it more difficult to follow up and control the operations.

The department must respond to Ivo’s criticism by 15 December at the latest.

SVT has asked the head of the unit for a comment.
