Serious engine problems on hundreds of thousands of cars? Here are the models concerned

Serious engine problems on hundreds of thousands of cars Here

Hundreds of thousands of cars from the Stellantis and Renault groups are affected by design defects in their engines.

If you have recently experienced mechanical problems with your Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Dacia, Opel or even Nissan, remember that you are not alone. Since 2012 and the launch of the 1.2 liter PureTech engines at Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, etc.) and the 1.2 liter TCe within the Renault group, hundreds of thousands of cars have been identified with suspected design defects. In both cases, many motorists have experienced to their cost premature wear of the timing belt, excess oil consumption, braking problems and, for some, engine failure.

Among users, some no longer count the visits to the garage and the expenses for repairs. With most of them receiving unsatisfactory responses from manufacturers who often remind them that ”compliance with the oil maintenance interval and the use of the correct oil are essential to preserve the ‘condition of the timing belt.” An essential mechanical part, the timing belt when defective can cause serious breakdowns, which can lead to engine breakage. At Stellantis, several waves of vehicle recalls have already taken place. In November 2020, the group performed a first gigantic encore. It concerned 500,000 models produced between 2013 and 2017. In December 2022, it carried out a new one for many models produced after 2017.

The Renault group, for its part, is currently the subject of a collective complaint. Although forced communication of a certain number of elements was ordered by the summary judge of the court of Versailles (Yvelines) in March 2023, the group never complied and appealed the decision . An appeal which will be examined on November 29. Today, dissatisfied customers of the two main automobile groups in France have decided to unite to demand compensation. While awaiting the verdict of current and future procedures, which will certainly be long, we provide you below with the list of all the models equipped with these famous 1.2 liter PureTech or 1.2 liter TCe engines which could potentially be affected by this problem.
