The care at special residences for the elderly, Säbo, has serious shortcomings. This is evident from a national inspection carried out by the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo), writes a representative of the authority on DN Debatt.

The shortcomings are, among other things, that end-of-life care does not comply with the rules, that drug handling is not patient-safe, and that there are deficiencies in continuity and documentation.

The review consists of both questionnaire responses from patients, relatives and staff, as well as over 53,000 municipal health care records from municipally run Säbo in 283 of Sweden’s 290 municipalities.

None of the municipalities examined fully meet the applicable requirements.

According to Ivo, the minimum level of care at Säbo is unacceptably low, despite the fact that Swedish care in international comparisons fares relatively well.

Low continuity and language barriers in the staff groups as well as deficiencies in record keeping are factors that can challenge the working methods at Säbo.

Ivo will take decisions on sanctions to get municipalities to take measures in cases where it is deemed necessary.
