George RR Martin, the author of “The Song of Ice and Fire“which served as a template for the successful series “game of Thrones“ served, published an update on a planned spin-off series on his blog. He announced that it would be completely different than originally planned.
On December 31, 2023, George RR Martin published a blog post raving about the animated series Blue Eye Samurai, which has received high praise from both viewers and critics in the past.
At this time, he also announced news about the planned spin-off series Nine Voyages. These have now been completely replanned – the reason for this is probably that production costs are too high.

What will Nine Voyages be about? The Nine Voyages series will revolve around Corlys Velaryon aka the Sea Serpent and show his legendary journeys, as the book author revealed.
Why were the old plans for a spin-off discarded? The series was actually supposed to be a live-action film adaptation. But Martin explained the reason why the old plans were scrapped and she decided to go with the animation style.
The high costs of a live-action implementation are said to have been simply too high to implement the story with real sets.
[… ] Budget constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitive, especially since half the series is set at sea and a different port needs to be created each week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles, from Volantis to Qarth and… Well, and so on.
There’s a whole world out there. And we have a much better chance of showing them with animations.

George RR Martin fully supported the decision to make Nine Voyages an animated series, he noted.

Which Game of Thrones animated series are still planned? In addition to Nine Voyages, two other animated series based on the well-known fantasy universe are also in the works. However, it is still unknown what the other two series projects will be about.
However, the series have not yet received an official green light. So it can still happen that the projects are canceled again before we get to see them.
