Serial killer Dexter should continue with a new series … but please not like this!

Serial killer Dexter should continue with a new series but

After series like Dahmer, You and Mindhunter, it almost seems as if Netflix has leased serial killer entertainment for itself. But of course that is not the case. Long before Netflix’s murder, documentary and true crime wave (as well as recent formats such as German Crime Story: Tied up at Amazon) there was dexter from US broadcaster Showtime.

After 8 seasons, Michael C. Hall’s criminal murderer is a legendary part of TV history, with an equally legendary, hated series ending. In this respect, it was not surprising that Dexter a year ago with Dexter: New Blood was allowed to return.

The sequel impressed despite the controversial finale. Now she has been deposed, but what not the end is.

Dexter sequel is dead, but the series universe lives on

We know from TVLine that despite record ratings, Dexter New Blood no 2nd season preserved, so remain a 10-episode miniseries. Strictly speaking, that was the announced plan from the start. Even if he faltered at times due to the enormous success of the sequel series.

Dexter: New Blood

But the confirmed end of Dexter: New Blood doesn’t mean that Showtime will let its own successful brand lie fallow. The station is looking behind the scenes Alternatives that continue to grow the Dexter series universe.

Currently these are just “conversations” that take place in secret. If we believe the inside sources, among the possible new Dexter series is also a Dexter prequel be that tells the backstory of Michael C. Hall’s Miami killer. That would be one though creative disasterwhich as an idea must absolutely be discarded again.

Why a Dexter backstory series is the worst idea ever

Even if the later Dexter seasons dropped in quality, the series was a piece of Quality TV between 2006 and 2013: complex in character, produced to a high standard and narratively different. She was one of the first to make a serial killer the main character, commenting on the incomprehensible social goings-on around him in a dry narrator’s voice behind his sunny facade. And who filled his inner emptiness at night by meticulously wrapping his victims in plastic.

Up until his faked death in Season 8, Dexter was there, unbeknownst to himself, on the search for his humanity. The fact that Dexter: New Blood confronted him as a broken man with his abandoned son finally gave this character journey a fitting conclusion.

Michael C. Hall and Devon Graye as Young Dexter (on the Dexter series)

A series on Dexter’s origins, on the other hand, would be a step backwards. We would have to witness how his 9 seasons witnessed development withdrawn instead to witness the bloody awakening of his murder instinct.

As a non-Dexter series, such a grim awakening might well have its appeal. But as a prequel that boils down to a known ending, such a “Young Dexter” would only provoke boredom. Lots of plastic and nothing behind it. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi showed us just how uninspired something like this can look. And unlike the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, young Dexter might be the Tension don’t buy it with tricks like flashing ahead into the future. Dexter: New Blood made that impossible.

Then let’s add that within 8 seasons it’s Dexter already several flashbacks in Dexter’s youth existed, a journey into this past would be nothing more than the overly lengthy formulation of its long-known prehistory.

What would be a good series alternative in the Dexter universe?

Of course, we should fundamentally question whether further sequels to Dexter’s world are necessary. Especially after the radical end of New Blood. At the moment, the search for more Dexter series just seems like trying to do that Franchise keep milking ’til it bleeds.

Baton passing: Dexter and son Harrison

If a Dexter universe is inevitable, then it should at least show the same bold creativity as the two previous series. After the second Dexter series, many things pointed to one Spin-off starring Dexter’s son Harrison there. This was brilliantly played by Jack Alcott, but lost the sympathy of many fans in the New Blood finale. (Wouldn’t that be exciting? A hate character as the main character?)

Since Michael C. Hall made his New Blood appearance as “cathartic Dexter farewell” considered , a look at secondary characters apart from the serial killer would also be a possibility that Franchises grow in an unexpected direction let. For example, what police colleague Batista (David Zayas) is doing in Miami, we could only guess at his guest appearance with Easter Eggs in New Blood. How does Masuka (CS Lee) deal with his inappropriate comments in today’s modern world? Or we explore key season characters like Lumen (Julia Stiles) to find out what became of the people whose lives Dexter shaped and spared.

One thing is certain: so that the Dexter universe is growing doesn’t lose its edge, it must also remain a pioneer in its next series. And no matter what this hopefully bold, rowdy, or surprising new venture, it certainly won’t be found in a prequel about Dexter’s childhood.
