At least 64 civilians have been massacred in attacks since Friday, March 11 in Irumu territory, in the east of the country. According to the Kivu Security Barometer, several villages were stormed over the weekend and Wednesday, March 16. The ADF, the Allied Democratic Forces, could be behind the killings. Despite the presence of the Ugandan and Congolese armies, the attacks are increasing and even tend to be exported further to the west of the territories.

The first attacks took place on the night of Thursday March 10 to Friday March 11 in the village of Mambumembume, on the border between the territories of Beni and Irumu, west of the national road 4 which crosses the northern region. South. During this first assault, at least 27 civilians were killed, and houses and vehicles were set on fire.

On Saturday, the criminals continued their grisly journey, stopping in several other villages where at least five other people are believed to have lost their lives, according to local civil society.

On Monday, the assailants attacked three other villages further north: Apende, Ndimo and Bwanasura. During these attacks, 37 other residents were murdered.

This series of murders appears to observers to be reprisals for the joint intervention of the Ugandan and Congolese armies. But the locality of the massacres raises questions. The ADF generally operate east of the RN4, not far from the border with Uganda. But lately, their zone of activity seems to have shifted to the west, where the military forces are less present.
