Perez managed to take the car to the pits, but there it was clear that he was forced to abandon the race in Mexico City.

– It is a sad day. The hatch was there and I went for it completely. In retrospect, maybe I shouldn’t have been so optimistic, says Perez to Viaplay.

Sergio Perez is second in the drivers’ championship, far behind his superb teammate Max Verstappen, who has already secured his third straight championship.

The future in question

But the Mexican’s future at Red Bull has been called into question after questionable performances this season in a superior car, and this kind of result does not boost his shares – even though team principal Christian Horner has expressed support for Perez.

– Sergio has a great bond with the team and a strong relationship with Max Verstappen and we want to see him finish second in the championship, Horner said ahead of the race weekend.

Verstappen won again

The race in Mexico continued without the big favorite of the home crowd. Dane Kevin Magnussen crashed badly so that the race was stopped completely for a while. But after the restart there was no talk of the matter, Max Verstappen won again and had Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc alongside him on the podium.

With that, Hamilton caught up 19 points on Perez in the fight for second place overall. Perez is now 20 points ahead of Hamilton.
