A man who was sentenced to prison was not given a place in a detention center and remained in custody – for almost a year. Now the Justice Ombudsman (JO) directs sharp criticism at the Correctional Service, writes Dagens Juridik.
Although the condemned man had no restrictions, he had to sit isolated from meeting other inmates and the cell lacked a toilet. For six weeks, he was also not allowed to receive visitors, as there were inmates living in the visiting rooms.
The man was first in custody in Sollentuna but was then moved to Norrköping where he was in custody for eight months.
Only after almost a year as a prison sentence was the man placed in a detention center, which violates the time limit in the Penal Time Act.
JO is now directing serious criticism at the Correctional Service, even though it is noted that the prison has taken measures and tried to get the man relocated to a so-called community prison.
