Matti Mononen, the coach of Senni Salminen, who injured his ankle, sees that going to the World Championships would have been too big a risk.
Triple jumper Senni Salminen will be left out of next week’s World Championships in Athletics in Belgrade. Salminen’s ankle spun in last Sunday’s race in Paris. He preferred to skip the World Championships in indoor tracks and focus on preparing for the summer race season.
– A magnetic image was taken of the ankle. Nothing was found there, but the World Cup and European Championships are waiting for me in the summer, so I thought it best to let my ankle rest so that I don’t risk anything for the summer now, Salminen said in a press release from the Finnish Sports Confederation.
Coach of Salminen Matti Mononen said it was decided to whistle the game at this point so as not to jeopardize the summer season.
– The risks would have been too great. The main competitions are in the summer, we decided to give the ankle a flute now so that we can start training normally towards the summer, Mononen told Urheilu.
No actual treatment is required.
– It’s enough that we lighten the program. Senni would have had a short holiday after the hall season anyway, now this started a little early. By the way, we haven’t invested much in the hall age, Mononen explained.
“The best skills could not be shown”
Although the hall season remained a torso, according to Mononen, doing it looked promising for the summer.
– Good things to do, even though the best skills could not be shown now. Coming to the plank didn’t quite work, at least one more competition would have been needed. Looking at the summer, it still looks really good, Mononen estimates.
The goals for the summer are clear.
– Records will be set to improve and succeed in value competitions. Of course you have to get closer to 15 meters than the 14 meters limit. But we are going to exercise restraint, but I think there will be a good impression, Mononen predicts.
Salminen wants to see the bright side of things in the midst of difficulties.
– I think it’s still a bit of an extramotivation for summer, Salminen said.
The World Cup halls in Belgrade will be competing on 18-20. March. Finland has six athletes named for the competition after Salminen’s absence, but the team may still be completed.
