Senegalese Minister of Youth and Sports Khady Diène Gaye refused to renew Aliou Cisse in his position for three reasons. The first is not having managed to fulfill the objectives which had been assigned to him, namely a new title of African champion during the last CAN in Ivory Coast, but above all a qualification in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup. Second reason given by the minister: the regression of the Lions of Teranga in the Fifa ranking. Third reason, more curious: a risk of disaffection between Aliou Cissé and the Senegalese.
Khady Diène Gaye then asked the Senegalese Football Federation to take the necessary measures to ensure Senegal’s participation in the next African Cup of Nations. The Lions face Malawi in ten days in Dakar for the 3rd day of these qualifications.
The Federation, after taking note of the Minister’s decision, mandates its president and the national technical director to set up an interim staff. A page is turning for the Lions of Teranga, with the departure of Aliou Cissé, in office for nine and a half years. It is with him that Senegal won its first CAN in 2022. He also qualified the team for successive world championships, in 2018 and 2022.
