In April 2024, the sci-fi MMO Elite Dangerous offered spaceships for the real-money currency ARX for the first time, breaking a promise to the community. The subsequent criticism fizzled out. Now the developers are repeating the move.
What’s new in Elite Dangerous? Update 18.08 for the sci-fi MMO was released on August 7, 2024. The new features include:
In addition, there are two new additions, the Type 8 ships Standard and Stellar, which are every trader’s dream with their mix of large cargo space (406 tons), solid speed, good heat resistance and high fuel efficiency.
Elite Dangerous is the perfect space simulator – here is a trailer:
The crux of the matter: for now, you can only get the two early access spaceships using the real money currency ARX. The standard version costs 16,520 ARX (a package for just under 11.50 euros should be enough), the Stellar alternative with red paint, special cargo transport equipment and more cargo space is said to be worth 33,000 ARX (so you have to invest almost 23 euros).
Frontier ignores criticism
This is not the first time! In April 2024, the developers of Elite Dangerous introduced spaceships for the first time for the real money currency ARX, thereby breaking a promise to the community. Almost five years earlier, those responsible at Frontier Developments had asserted that you should only be able to buy cosmetic items with ARX. Pay2Win was something they wanted to avoid at all costs.
However, parts of the community viewed the sale of spaceships for real money as a clear pay-to-win move. The criticism was great. The protest obviously had little effect, as the developers are repeating this step.
At least: Update 18.08 brings the Python MK II, a spaceship that was previously only sold for ARX as an early access offer, to regular stores. Now you can get the Python for 79 million in-game credits. There is also trouble with another sci-fi MMO: Star Citizen bans employees from working from home – He sues and ends up getting 32,000 euros
