In Sweden, many people receive a so-called occupational pension from the employer, and it is also not unusual for one to have their own savings for the pension.
In addition to this, anyone who has worked or lived in Sweden receives a so-called general pension, which is based on all income for which tax is paid. In other words, it also includes, for example, unemployment compensation or parental allowance.

The general pension, which is paid out as long as you live, also includes the guaranteed pension, which is not based on income.

What does the average public pension look like?
But how big a general pension do you actually get in Sweden? Well, according to figures from The Pensions Authority the average public pension, in January 2024, was SEK 16,200 per month before tax for residents in the country.
However, how much you get in public pension differs depending on where in the country you live. News24 has taken a closer look at how the average public pension before tax looks like in Sweden’s 21 counties.

So it differs between the counties
It turns out that the highest average public pension was paid out in Stockholm County during July. There, the average amount for women and men landed at SEK 15,853 and SEK 17,926. For everyone in the county, the average was SEK 16,804.
The lowest average public pension – SEK 15,806 – was paid out in Kronoberg county during July. There is thus a difference of just over SEK 1,000 between Stockholm County and Kronoberg County.
