The American tradition of Groundhog Day occurs on February 2 each year. The tradition involves releasing the marmot named Punxsutawney Phil from its enclosure. What it does next is said to be able to determine when spring comes.

However, the tradition is not entirely without controversy. Among other things, it has received criticism from the animal rights organization PETA, which believes that the marmot should be replaced, reports USA Today.

Watch the video to learn more about the tradition and the criticism leveled at it.
