Rönnskärsverken in Skelleftehamn is located in Skellefteå municipality and is Sweden’s only smelter for the production of base metals, and works with the recycling of electronic scrap.
The alarm about the fire came on the night of Tuesday. The public was warned and asked to go indoors and close doors as there was a risk of toxic fumes spreading in the area.
Västerbotten and Norrbotten’s rescue services cooperated in the operation.
– It was a fantastic collaboration. We managed to hold our containment lines. You have to be lucky sometimes and we were lucky this time. It was an incredibly successful effort despite so much being burned down, says Magnus Nyberg, effort leader.
