Assassination attempts against candidates continue before the elections to be held on June 2 in Mexico. Alfredo Cabrera, who was a candidate for mayor in Coyuca de Benitez, Guerrero state, was assassinated at a rally he held just days before the election. The attacker recorded the moment of the assassination on his mobile phone.

In the images shared on social media, it was seen that while Cabrera was shaking hands with his supporters, the attacker approached him and pulled out his gun and shot him repeatedly. Cabrera, who was shot in the head, died at the scene, while the attacker was killed by fire opened by the Mexican National Guard.
Local media stated that Cabrera was under police protection after the armed attack he suffered in 2023.
22 CANDIDATES HAVE BEEN KILLED SO FAR
22 candidates have been killed in Mexico since September.
According to government data, 22 people who ran for local elections across the country have been killed since September. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated in his statement at the beginning of April that the cartels were attacking other candidates in order to get their own candidates elected.
In Mexico, both local and general elections will be held simultaneously on Sunday. The people will go to the polls to elect the new president, members of parliament, 9 governors and approximately 20 thousand local officials. Approximately 27 thousand soldiers and National Guard will serve to ensure security during the election.
