Season 20 surprises with the second major change

Grey’s Anatomy doggedly holds on to the record for longest-running drama series and underpins its own success with the second zero: Shonda Rhimes’ hospital series now ordered the 20th season. However, the return will look a little different than before.

Grey’s Anatomy gets its 20th season – despite major upheavals

Despite her longevity, Grey’s Anatomy faces perhaps its toughest task of all in season 20: her must keep its audience, although main character Meredith Gray leaves the series. Not to mention another lost doctor and a cast of new main characters. The successful hospital show was rarely on shaky ground.

THR reported that season 20 is indeed coming to tackle that ordeal. However, with one crucial change behind the scenes that should not be underestimated: Also Showrunner Krista Vernoff is leaving the series, after having had Grey’s Anatomy completely under her creative control since Season 14 in 2017. Her handwriting brought the hospital back to its roots and strengths after a dry spell.

Whether this insider knowledge will be enough to keep the series alive will be seen in autumn 2023 at the start of the 20th season.
