In episode 6 of the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Sauron (Charlie Vickers) once again proves himself to be a master of deception when he manipulates Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) with words and visions. But an astonishing theory now raises the question of whether we too have been deceived since season 1.
Sauron theory on the Lord of the Rings series: Do we believe a flashback that isn’t one at all?
Season 2 of The Rings of Power focuses on Sauron’s path to becoming the ultimate Middle Earth villain. However, right in the prologue of the new episodes, the current season revealed that his rise was not easy. When he wanted to succeed his defeated master Morgoth at the beginning of the Second Age, orc leader Adar (Sam Hazeldine) stabbed him with Morgoth’s crown. The fact that this new weapon is now gaining importance is also completely reassessed by a scene from Season 1.
In the Season 1 prologue, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) gave insights into the past history of Middle Earth two years ago and we got to see an oversized Sauron, before whom countless Orcs bowed (see picture). It is a Sauron in full armor, with the distinctive iron crown on his head. Before Morgoth’s fall, Sauron would not have been able to wear this crown because it still belonged to his master and, as Season 2 taught us, it was subsequently in Adar’s possession.
Now, of course, it could be argued that in the first season of The Rings of Power we simply saw Galadriel’s (wrong) idea of Sauron’s coronation. Or that the showrunners used a visual placeholder for Sauron (as we knew him from the prologue of the Peter Jackson film) because they did not yet know exactly where Sauron’s story would lead him. Reddit user herrgraumann, however, has another exciting theory: He believes that we were sold a flashback as a flashback.

The gigantic Dark Lord we see in Season 1 could therefore be Sauron/Annatar at the height of his power: a Vision of the future after he conquered Morgoth’s crown and subjugated the Orcswho are currently following Adar.
This also fits in with Season 2, because Galadriel and the Elven King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) have visions with their new rings. These show, like Galadriel’s mirror for Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring, “Things that were, and things that are, and things that may yet be”If this turns out to be true, the Amazon series The Rings of Power would have fooled us with one of its first scenes.
