Open Thay’s Necromancer Book – Quick Guide:

  • Enter the Apothecary in the Ruined Village and find the secret cellar door.
  • Arrived in the basement: Look for the rusted key and the next secret room.
  • Outwit the talking magic mirror and disable the traps.
  • Find the Dark Amethyst in the Phase Spider’s Nest to unseal the book.

    • How to find the Necromancer Book: In the Ruined Village, go to the second building on the left – the Apothecary’s House. On a counter is a book with the quest Search the Basement.

    Behind this counter you will find the basement hatch to the underground adventure. Once in the basement, you’ll find the rusted key in a rule in the westernmost room of the lab. There behind three wooden boxes you will find a lever to the next secret room after a perception check.

    Start a conversation with the Talking Magic Mirror and outsmart it. Then open the closed gate with the rusty key. Cautious! Disarm the traps afterwards – there are many. Grab the book.

    How to open the Necromancer Book of Thay: To follow the dark path of necromancy and open the book, you need an item called Dark Amethyst. Visit the Ruined Village, this time not a house – but The Whispering Depths:

  • Go to the well in the Ruined Village, examine it and enter the Whispering Depths.
  • Get ready for a fight against nasty phase spiders.
  • Go to the nest of the phase spider matriarch.
  • Sneak in, Hint: Invisibility Potion; or defeat the matriarch.
  • The glowing purple Dark Amethyst lies under their nest next to a broken pillar – Press Left-Alt.

    • Indulge in necromancy or destroy the nightmarish book? There are many ways to use Thay’s necromancy. Here are the options:

  • Read it yourself: Discover the secret of Thay’s necromancy for yourself. As you turn the page, you face a total of three Wisdom checks of increasing difficulty – 10, 15, and 20. Successfully earning you the Hidden Knowledge achievement: A +1 bonus on all Wisdom saving throws and skill checks. Also the spell: “speak with dead” – 3rd level necromancy spell.
  • Gael: You can give it to Gale to help him. You won’t get the option if you open the book first.
  • Astarion: Once opened, you can give the book to Astarion to advance his unique story. However, you can only give the book to one of the two story characters. It might even turn out to be a more intimate romance with one of the companions.
  • Destroy itMission: You can destroy the book with holy damage – which I wouldn’t recommend. For example, you can cast Guiding Missile on the book with Shadowheart. Danger: Get ready for three deadly shadow enemies that are extremely resilient. Without a strong squad, you will probably die very quickly.
