The Sweden Democrats want anyone who applies for citizenship or a residence permit and is then suspected of a crime to have their application paused. It shall also apply to persons as young as 15 years of age.
– Just like many other Swedes, I feel incredible irritation that people who are suspected of crimes are granted residence permits or even citizenship. It affects the possible penalties at a later stage, says Tobias Andersson, SD’s legal policy spokesperson.
Regardless of how serious the crime is, the person must have their application suspended in the meantime. Should the criminal suspicion be dismissed, the process must be taken up again.
Suspected murder
The party raises the issue due to the fact that a 16-year-old boy is now in custody on suspicion of having shot dead a security guard at a gym in Stockholm at the end of March.
The police raised their suspicions against him in April but by then he had disappeared and was found to be in Armenia, where he is a citizen. During his time in Armenia, he was granted Swedish citizenship, which Aftonbladet has reported.
From 15 years
The limit for when the process can be paused, Tobias Andersson believes, may be at the age of criminal jurisdiction of 15 years. The party has previously proposed lowering the penalty to 13 years.
– We want to lower the age of criminal liability, and then this proposal would also have hit younger people, but if we start from today’s situation, it would have stopped at 15.
If the person is convicted, Andersson thinks that even minor crimes should result in deportation.
– Then you have broken your conduct test and have nothing to do here.
