Scream VI star Dermot Mulroney almost caused a PR disaster – and reveals in an interview how the horror glitch came about

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Attention, the following interview contains massive spoilers for the end of Scream VI. If you don’t want to spoil the surprises, it’s best to read on only after you’ve seen the film.

Each of the previous films in the Scream franchise is driven by the question: Who is behind the Ghostface mask? In the past, creative measures were often taken to keep this biggest secret during filming: scripts without endings, scripts with fake endings or revelations shot several times with different killers.

Scream VI didn’t quite add up. Thanks to a spoiler glitch, actor Dermot Mulroney, who plays Detective Bailey in Part 6, knew who the killer would be from the start. He couldn’t keep the secret completely to himself like he could in an interview with Moviepilot reveals.

Who is the killer in Scream 6? Dermot Mulroney learned the Ghostface spoiler too soon

Dermot Mulroney is otherwise rarely seen in completely insane killer roles. In Scream VI he was allowed to spin freely. Because his detective investigating the Ghostface murders turns out to be a big puller at the end.

At the start of Scream VI we met the stars of the new horror film for an interview. After Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega and Courteney Cox told us about the challenging filming, we also got to sit down with the new Ghostface and talk to him about the big reveal.

Moviepilot: You don’t get the chance to talk to Ghostface every day. When you landed the role of Detective Bailey, did you know you were playing the evil mastermind behind it all?

Dermot Mulroney: I have that. There was a bit of a mix up when they showed me parts of the script. So I knew. I didn’t know the rest though. I didn’t know it was all a family affair. I also didn’t know the connections between the characters and to previous storylines. So even though I knew I was the villain, there were still a lot of surprises for me later. Revealing why he’s the Ghostface Killer is so satisfying. Mainly because of Scream 5.

Was it hard to keep this secret for you?

It was hard. I actually babbled a few times. But don’t worry, Paramount’s PR department came right away and fixed it. Other people also made mistakes here and there, leaking this and that. But we’ve amazingly managed to keep it under wraps.

It’s a little nerve-wracking to talk about even now. It feels like I should still protect the secret. Because that’s what makes the Scream movies so entertaining: the mystery of who the killer is. The culprit is always Ghostface, but you never know why. And finding out why is just as fun as finding out who it is.

What was the most exciting thing you experienced while shooting?

Well, by far the most exciting thing was working with the entire cast, the two directors and the stunt crew on the theater shrine sequence, in the killer museum. The intensity of the sequence and how all the pieces come together here. That was really fun.

That triggered something in all of us because it’s the climax of every scream. That’s part of the promise of watching a scream movie: there’s a big dramaturgical explosion and climax at the end. When we got to this point, we wanted to make the most of it. That was really a challenge. But the whole crew of actors also laughed a lot that day.

So you had fun playing this totally deranged killer at the end?

I had more fun playing this character’s reveal than I can imagine. Gosh, I never don’t have one. I always enjoy films, even if they’re dark. But the way I usually work is always pretty carefree. The scene unleashed something in all of us. For me at that moment it was a feeling of joy and fun, bad fun. As an actor, it was very satisfying to play that reveal scene.

Thank you for the interview!
