Since you met your “half”, have you only seen through her? This is completely normal, say researchers, who explain to us the process behind it.

In a new study published in the journal “Behavioral Sciences“, the link between romantic love and the brain’s behavioral activation system (BAS) has been explored for the first time. An update on this fascinating research.

    Love changes the brain

For this study, researchers from the ANU, the University of Canberra and the University of South Australia recruited 1,556 young adults “in love”.

The latter had to observe their reactions/emotions towards their companions, but also their behavior towards them and the attention they paid to those close to them.

The main idea of the researchers here? Observe the different mechanisms and reactions of the brain when participants entered a state of love.

To better analyze this process, the BAS-SLO scale (Behavioral Activation System – Sensitivity to a Loved One) was used with a sample of young adults.

Secondly, hierarchical linear regression was used to identify associations on the BAS-SLO scale in a subsample of 812 young adults in a relationship for two years or less.

Result ? It’s oxytocin – the love hormone – which would be responsible for the euphoria felt.

We know the role oxytocin plays in romantic love because waves of oxytocin flow through our nervous system and bloodstream when we interact with our loved ones.s”, says Dr Kavanagh, of the University of Canberra. However, this study shows “the way loved ones take on special significance. This is due to the combination of oxytocin and dopamine, a chemical that our brain releases during “romantic love.” Love activates associated brain pathways with positive feelings,” he relates.

Concretely, the fault would lie with the “hypothalamus” – this small region located in the heart of the brain – which would secrete testosterone, which itself would lead to the release of dopamine, the hormone of immediate pleasure.

Then, it is the lliberine which would be released – from the first sexual encounter – and which would encourage people to seek ever more contact… and to spend ever more time with each other.

People who experience romantic love are willing to rearrange their daily priorities, make themselves available (…) and take steps to make themselves desirable to those close to them by changing their clothing, mannerisms, habits or values“, the study reveals.”It is thus proven that when an individual is in love, the loved one takes on a special meaning.

A state, which therefore leaves less time for the individual in love to indulge in their usual activities, such as seeing their loved ones.

    The importance of affectionate gestures

If we succeed in falling in love and focusing our attention on the loved one, is it a foregone conclusion?

No believe other researchers, who showed in 2006 that a high blood concentration of NGF (a molecule involved in the growth, proliferation and survival of a certain number of neurons, editor’s note) is present in greater quantities in recent lovers than in people who have been in a relationship for more than a year.

Nevertheless, and despite the years that pass, the circle can remain virtuous: caresses, kisses and intimate relationships activate the attachment mechanism, leading to pleasure for two.
