Especially his unleashed body horror the most bizarre growths and unpleasant deformations celebrated, is Cronenberg’s greatest trademark, alongside his tireless curiosity for advanced technologies.

After Crimes of the Future, the Canadian is back this year with a new feature film, which will celebrate its world premiere at the current Cannes Film Festival. In the film’s plot, businessman Karsh (Vincent Cassel) is so grieving for his wife that he develops a revolutionary new technology. This should make it possible, through specially equipped high-tech cemeteries, to contact the deceased. It should also be possible to experience special aspects such as the decomposition process of the dead. The controversial procedure quickly sparked protests and the first graves in the cemetery were vandalized.

With The Shrouds, Cronenberg has not just staged another variation on his favorite themes. Through the film he also deals with the death of his wife Carolyn, who died in 2017, with whom he was together for decades.

In the current The Wrap interview, The Shrouds star Diane Kruger also talks about how she was surprised by the strong emotionality of the script and that the work was clearly for him the director’s most personal film holds.

When will the new David Cronenberg film be released in cinemas?

The Shrouds is currently being shown publicly for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival. A German distributor is just as uncertain as a German cinema release. However, the reactions in Cannes could accelerate developments surrounding the film. So far, Cronenberg’s latest film only has a theatrical release in France in September.
