Sinking ships – of course the film doesn’t sound as catchy as Battleship, but basically that’s exactly what we’re dealing with. The people behind GI Joe and Transformers thought it would be a good idea to make the classic game into a film. You can see what became of it on TV tonight.
That’s what Battleship is all about
Because it In the original game, Ships Sink has no story at all director Peter Berg (Hancock, Operation: Kingdom) and the writers Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber were able to completely indulge themselves and simply pull something out of their fingers where warships are sunk. The whole thing is garnished with a short appearance by Liam Neeson and the acting debut of singer Rihanna.
One thing is certain: Malevolent aliens misunderstood humanity’s messages that were sent into space. This results in one Alien invasion on Earth and at the forefront is, among others, Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), but also his older brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgård).
During a maneuver off Hawaii, a fight breaks out between the aliens and the humans. Why this has to take place on the sea, of all places, remains a bit unclear. But what matters are tons of aliens lots of explosions and gigantic warships and Rihanna as a weapons expert.
Even $220 million couldn’t make the ship-sinking movie a hit
The chances weren’t bad. After all, the ideas behind Transformers, GI Joe and many other similar films don’t sound any smarter on paper. Maybe it was the lack of humor or the script, but Battleship didn’t become a successful franchise.
Universal
The poster for Battleship makes no secret of the Transformers role model.
With production costs of around $220 million and a marketing budget of another $200 million (via Forbes), Battleship is said to have grossed “only” $303 million (via Box Office Mojo). Of course, that’s not enough to make a profit made the film a million-dollar grab.
Nevertheless, it is of course interestingto look at how a game as simple as sinking ships turned into such a gigantic flop – and what kind of film these huge sums of money ultimately went into.
