Sci Fi epic has already far surpassed Part 1 in one

Sci-fi fans have waited two and a half years for Dune: Part Two. After the enthusiastic initial reactions, it was already apparent that the sequel would captivate the masses. Apparently the audience is happy to be lured into a devastating trap by Dune 2, because the number of people watching speaks for itself.

Box office success for Dune 2: The box office result surpasses its predecessor

Paul Atreides takes revenge on the Harkonnen who destroyed his home with the help of the Fremen in Dune 2. As the Hollywood Reporter reports, audiences can’t get enough of the film, which is like a spectacular sandworm ride. The sci-fi sequel is already on its first weekend $81.5 million in the United States recorded. The 178.5 million worldwide are not from bad parents either. And the sequel only starts in China and Japan this week. In Germany, Dune 2 grossed around 7.7 million euros.

Dune 2: Paul mobilizes the masses

These are the ones for both leading actor Timothée Chalamet and director Denis Villeneuve most successful film releases of her career. According to Variety, the last similarly comparable weekend success in the United States was Five Nights at Freddy’s last fall, which took in a surprising $80 million after one weekend. It just can’t keep up with the gigantic Barbie 2023 success of $155 million in the first weekend.

Dune 2: Preview success, IMAX and the sequel compared to part 1

Already in Previews played Dune 2 overall on the first day 12 million dollars a, what a Doubling the preview gross of Part 1 is ($5.1 million). It’s the strongest preview start since Oppenheimer (10.5 million) and Barbie (22.3 million).

Dune 1 was (understandably) unable to attract the same level of audience with its theatrical release in Corona times. According to Box Office Mojo, Part 1 is currently bringing in a total of $433 million worldwide. So with its 175 million, Dune 2 already has 40% of its predecessor’s total box office take on the first weekend earned.

Dune 2 casts its shadow ahead

Dune 2 was particularly popular in IMAX theaters, not least because the film was partly shot with IMAX cameras. The sequel grossed $32.3 million worldwide there alone. The few desired ones IMAX performances are now scheduled at 3 a.m. in the USA and are still mostly sold out.

If the success of the
190 million expensive sci-fi sequel continues, it is only a matter of time before it becomes official Dune 3 is announced.
