The upcoming sci-fi hit Dune 2 has some exciting new additions to the cast of characters alongside returning characters like Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). Many are most looking forward to Marvel star Florence Pugh (Black Widow), to play the mysterious Princess Irulan. “The world is not ready for them“, some fans are already excited on Twitter. But what’s behind the role?
Post-Marvel: Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan embodies Dune 2’s most important development
Irulan is the oldest Daughter of the incredibly powerful Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Christopher Walken), who rules the known universe in the book Dune. As seen on screen in Dune, he betrays Paul’s father Leto (Oscar Isaac) and leaves the desert planet of Arrakis to the sinister Harkonnen once more.

Irulan’s position couldn’t be more precarious, Dune director Denis Villeneuve told Vanity Fair. Although she belongs to the most powerful family in the universe, “but she is afraid that her father might lose the throne“. Then she would just be a pawn between the interests of House Atreides and House Harkonnen.
Caution, from here on Dune 2 spoilers follow!
In the second part of Herbert’s novel, which is supposed to be the basis for Dune 2, Paul defeats both the Harkonnen and the forces of the Emperor with the help of the desert people of the Fremen. He forces him to give him Irulan as his wife and takes the throne of the known universe himself.
As a result, Irulan has to come to terms with Paul’s lover Chani (Zendaya), who has all of his affections. Finally, she acts as a chronicler of his rule and turns out to be the actual narrator of Herbert’s original book.
When will the sci-fi epic Dune 2 be in cinemas?
How exactly Villeneuve will implement Irulan’s role in his adaptation, however, is not yet foreseeable. At the latest for Dune 2 theatrical release on November 2, 2023 fans will know for sure.
