Sci fi destruction spree that grossed 200 million and turned Saving

Alien invasions (in the movie) are nothing special. World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles therefore wanted to offer something new in the science fiction subgenre. The 70 million blockbuster that grossed over 200 million worldwide in 2011, combined the attack from space with the close-up realism of more recent war films. Tonight you can find out if that works.

That’s what the sci-fi movie that’s on TV today is about. An alien invasion is recorded all over the world. Los Angeles is among the last global metropolises that can still fight the invaders. World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles follows a group of Marines as they fight the threatening alien presence.

Aaron Eckhart in World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles

While director Jonathan Liebesman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) was aiming for the equivalent of an FSK-12 rating, he based his film’s look on tough war films and thrillers. His cinematic models were Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and Paul Greengrass’ 9/11 factual thriller Flight 93. In this way he crosses the invasion story à la Independence Day with a quasi-documentary one Shaky camera look meant to put you in the middle of the action and make military defenses against aliens look realistic.

The result was not particularly well received by critics. While some at least praised the action scenes of the otherwise schematically told film, critic Roger Ebert wrote in 2011 with usual restraint:

Battle: Los Angeles is loud, violent, ugly and stupid. Its creation reflects a chilling cynicism on the part of its makers, who don’t even attempt to make it anything more than mindless chaos. Here we have a sci-fi movie, the one insult for the words “science” and “fiction” and the hyphen in between. How to watch World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles

World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles will today, August 28, from 10:05 p.m. on Nitro aired. Alternatively, you can stream the film on Netflix, WOW and the Amazon channel Filmtastic.
