Some ideas have so much potential that nobody looks at the numbers. That must have happened with RIPD – Rest in Peace Department. The sci-fi movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) is one of the worst blockbuster flops of recent times, but continued nonetheless. Today the debut is on TV.
On TV: Ryan Reynolds ensures order in a sci-fi hit as a dead cop
Nick Walker (Reynolds) is not having his best day. After the policeman dies during an operation, he is promptly recruited for the so-called RIPD: the police department of the afterlife, whose members are tasked with hunting down evil spirits and other beings. Walker and his hardened partner Roy Pulsipher (Bridges) uncover a demon’s (Kevin Bacon) evil plan.
RIPD grossed just $78 million on a $130 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). On average, the criticism was not exactly enthusiastic either about the sci-fi movie. It gets a 25 out of 100 on Metacritic. However, a sequel was produced.
2022 came with RIPD 2: Rise of the Damned a direct-to-DVD sequel to the home theater market. The plot revolves around the death and revenge of Roy Pulsipher (Jeffrey Donovan), who is murdered by a gang of outlaws in the Wild West. Reynolds and Bridges are no longer part of the cast.
When is RIPD on TV?
RIPD is running this Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. on Vox. If you don’t have time, you can catch up on the film on August 18 at 10:10 p.m. In addition to Reynolds, Bridges and Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker (Red Dragon) can be seen in front of the camera, among others.
