The incident occurred in the morning, local time, in Plateau state in central Nigeria. According to AP, citing local media, at least 12 people have died and 26 have been taken to hospital for treatment.
In a post on X, Nigeria’s national rescue service also previously wrote that “several students died” in the landslide without specifying the exact number.
There is no information regarding what caused the collapse, but up to 120 students and teachers are believed to have been stuck in the racial masses. And since the collapse, a major rescue effort has been underway with the help of the police and military to get people out who are believed to be trapped.
A witness to Reuters says that many people were trapped in the destroyed building.
– Some have been taken to hospital, but many are still there, says the witness.
In pictures from the scene, you can see a large number of people trying to help in the rescue work and how some are standing with pickaxes and shovels to dig into the rubble.
