“The decision to cancel transportation is not taken lightly, and the safety of our students is always the top priority,” said director of education JoAnna Roberto. “With winter right around the corner, we want to be clear with families how decisions are made and where they can find up-to-date information when they need it.”

The board will make a decision by 6:30 am if school or student transportation services are being canceled for the day.

School closure due to inclement weather can be for all Grand Erie schools, or by zones.

The board’s four school zones are Norfolk (Zone 1), Haldimand, Six Nations of the Grand River, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (Zone 2), Brant County (Zone 3), and the City of Brantford (Zone 4).

Cancellation notifications will be posted on the board’s website at www.granderie.ca, X (Twitter) account @GEDSB, and shared with local media.

Families whose children utilize Student Transportation Services Brant Haldimand Norfolk can check for cancellations on the X (Twitter) account @STSBHN or by calling 519-751-7532.

STSBHN provides transportation for local Catholic and French Catholic boards as well as for Grand Erie students and gathers road and weather conditions from a number of sources before a decision is made to cancel services.

In the event of extreme cold weather – defined as -30 degrees Celsius (without wind-chill) at 5 am, or a high risk of frostbite (10 minutes or less) as of 5:45 am, student transportation services would be canceled but all schools would remain open to staff and students.

The board says it is the responsibility of parents or caregivers to decide if it’s safe to send their children to school.

When adverse weather conditions result in the closures, classroom teachers will post asynchronous learning opportunities — not for evaluation but to serve as a review — via Brightspace.

The Grand Erie District School Board employs a staff of 2,900 serving more than 27,000 students in 14 secondary schools and 58 elementary schools.
