German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon” to bring an end to the Ukraine war.

– Yes, I have decided to talk to the President of Russia at the right time, Scholz told the German public service company ARD on Sunday.

– But I am a responsible politician – I will not do it alone, he continued, adding that the issue must also be discussed with Ukraine.

When asked what “right opportunity” means, Scholz answered “soon”.

The last time Scholz and Putin spoke was almost two years ago, in December 2022.

However, it is unclear how long Scholz, who after last week’s German government crisis leads a minority government, will remain in power in Berlin. Already before Christmas, the Bundestag can vote on Scholz’s future, according to ARD.
