Scarlett Johanssons most controversial sci fi film that lost 60 million

Even a great story, visually stunning action scenes and Scarlett Johansson don’t save some films from financial catastrophe. At least that’s what it looks like in the case of Ghost in the Shell, which you can stream on Netflix tonight. The adaptation of the sci-fi cult manga of the same name failed, among other things, due to a violent racism controversy.

On Netflix: Sci-Fi hit with Scarlett Johansson made many fans extremely angry

Ghost in the Shell revolves around special agent Major Killian (Johansson), who fights terrorists with her elite unit in the near future. Killian is a cyborg whose human brain is embedded in a synthetic body. She encounters a murderous artificial intelligence named Kuze (Michael Pitt)through which she uncovers the secrets of her own past.

Many critics Ghost in the Shell praised Johansson’s performance upon its theatrical release and its visually stunning scenes, but found the adaptation to be a disappointment compared to the manga original (via Metacritic).

The casting of many Asian characters with white actors also caused a public outcry (via The Guardian), which contributed to the film’s box office flop. According to Deadline, the producers lost a catastrophic sum of at least $60 million. All future cinema plans for a franchise were dead.
