I think I was offered every Marilyn Monroe script there ever was

As Scarlett Johansson tells it, she was very much reduced to her appearance back then. She herself says she thinks she was offered every Marilyn Monroe script of all time. The rejections at the time were particularly hard on her.

She applied for the 2013 science fiction film Gravity by Alfonso Cuarón. She wanted the role of Dr. Play Ryan Stone. But she was rejected for the role and Sandra Bullock played the character in the final film. She was also rejected for the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2, as she explains in the interview.

I wanted this role so much. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. I asked myself, “Am I doing the right job?”

Emily Blunt was actually supposed to embody the superhero. However, the actress was unable to attend filming due to other contracts as she was committed to the film Gulliver’s Travels. At the time, Scarlett Johansson wondered if it was the end of her creative path.

Ultimately, Johansson was given a second chance and made a brief appearance in Iron Man 2. That was her big blockbuster success and she then became an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in a total of 9 films.

Her career also went better outside of the blockbuster cinema. She starred in highly acclaimed and creative films. She even received Oscar nominations for the films Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

She then learned to love her job again: “Suddenly it became clear to me: I still love this job. And that rekindled my passion for work.
