All that was required for Barcelona to secure the La Liga title was an away win against second-placed Espanyol. It wasn’t a long journey, however – the distance between Espanyol’s home arena Estadi Cornellà-El Prat and Barcelona’s ditto is only about 5 kilometers.
That Barcelona, who are unbeaten in the league at home this season, enjoy playing in the city of Barcelona was also evident.
Big star Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the Derbi Barceloní already in the eleventh minute. After that, Barcelona continued to play out and Alejandro Balde, Lewandowski and Jules Koundé extended “Barca’s” lead in turn.
Espanyol then reduced twice again at the end of the match, through Javi Puado and Joselu, and thus the final score was written 4–2 to Barcelona.
Supporters stormed the pitch as Barcelona secured the Spanish league title away from home.
After the final whistle, scandalous scenes unfolded. During the Barcelona players’ celebration, large numbers of supporters stormed the pitch and both teams’ players and managers had to rush off the pitch.
According to Spanish Marca, the police, using megaphones, asked the supporters to “leave the pitch if they did not want them to use violence”. According to the newspaper, no one should have been injured in the plane storming. However, the invasion is said to have led to material damage.
The victory meant that Barcelona have now secured their 27th league title – their first since 2019.
