In the news in Der Spiegel magazine, it was claimed that Brandt, who was prime minister from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), provided intelligence to the US military counter-espionage agency CIC from 1948 to March 17, 1952.
“VALUE OF GOLD MINE”
It is stated that the magazine, which reached the CIC’s declassified list dated June 1, 1952, had the list of German and Austrian informants examined by historian Thomas Boghardt at the US Military History Center. According to historian Boghardt, Brandt was a “gold mine” for American services.
The magazine wrote that Brandt briefed the CIC about the FDJ, the youth wing of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) and the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED).
It is claimed that Brandt also provided information on shipyards, factories, the railway system and the telephone network of the Soviet army.
MORE THAN 200 TIMES OVER 4 YEARS…
According to the sources in question, Brandt met with CIC liaison officers who classified him as “trusted” more than 200 times over 4 years.
It was stated that Brandt, who was an informant for 4 years, was registered with the code “O-35-VIII”.
Willy Brandt, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971, resigned after it was revealed that Günter Guillaume, his adviser and right-hand man in the Prime Ministry, was a DDR spy.
Willy Brandt died on 8 October 1992 in the town of Unkel, near Bonn, the former capital of Germany. (AA)
