Stating that under the law, North Korean companies must provide allowances to their workers, the source said that the labor force in the prison is technically “free” and that the authorities can make a 100 percent profit.
Emphasizing that products such as wigs, artificial eyelashes, beads and braids were obtained as a result of the forced labor of prisoners, the source said that these products correspond to 65 percent (approximately 23.94 million dollars) of the country’s total exports.
The source noted that 70 percent of the revenues from the products are used by the administration and the remaining 30 percent by the Ministry of Social Security.
Underlining that the prisoners were worked for 12 hours for production, the source said that if the prisoners could not reach the determined quotas, they were made to work overtime. (AA)
