When a pair of scissors was left outside, disaster struck.
A patient in a forensic psychiatric ward came across a pair of surgical scissors that had been used for dressing a wound – and cut his penis.
Now the hospital is reported to the Inspectorate for Care and Care, Ivo.
A routine matter ended in disaster.
When the staff at the forensic psychiatric department at a hospital in southern Sweden dressed a wound on one of their patients, a pair of surgical scissors was left behind. It ended up in the hands of another patient – who cut his penis. This is reported by the Siren news agency.
Found blood spatter in the patient’s room
“This is discovered when staff discovers blood spatter on the wall and floor inside the patient’s room,” says the hospital’s lex Maria notification to Ivo.
The patient had to be referred to the emergency room, where the medical staff had to insert a catheter into the urethra. According to the report, he is said to have received “lasting but” from the incident. However, he has not complained of pain either during or after the course of events.
The report states that the wound healed after two weeks and the patient has not shown signs of difficulty emptying the bladder.
Inadequate procedures
The department is criticized for deficient routines, processes and guidelines – which are considered to be the causes behind the accident. The concerned unit, the medical team and the head of the care unit have been informed of the contents of the investigation.
The incident occurred this summer and the relevant department has until the end of the year to take risk prevention measures, which should prevent similar incidents in the future.
