On Blu-ray: An overview of the various cuts of Apocalypse Now
In Francis Ford Coppola’s milestone, military police officer Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is tasked with tracking down and eliminating the renegade US Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) somewhere in the jungle during the Vietnam War. With a small unit, Willard goes deeper and deeper into it Heart of Darknesswhere the madness of war runs rampant.
The very creation of Apocalypse Now is like that spectacular and crazythat another film was made about it. The approximately 95-minute long documentary Journey into the Heart of Darkness is also included as an extra in the Collector’s Edition.
There are now three different versions of Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece, some of which give the film a new rhythm, change some scenes or leave them out entirely:
Compared to the 2.5 hour long theatrical version, the Redux version has a running time of an impressive 193 minutes. The latest final cut, on the other hand, runs almost exactly 3 hours. Which version is best remains a matter of taste. For example, some fans are of the opinion that the longest version in the Redux cut seems unnecessarily stretched due to passages such as the plantation section.
In addition to the three cut versions in the best 4K quality and the fantastic documentary Journey into the Heart of Darkness, the Collector’s Edition of Apocalypse Now offers lots more bonus material, including an audio commentary with Francis Ford Coppola, interviews, additional scenes and background information on the film’s music.
